The US said “working actively” on the polish fighter jet agreement for Ukraine
Chisinau, Moldova: US Secretary Antony Blinken said the week that the United States “worked actively” on the agreement with Poland to supply Ukraine with a jet that attacked Russia.
The agreement, according to a report, can involve Poland to hand over the existing MIG-29, the Soviet / Russian-made fighter jet pilot is accustomed, and the US will then give F-16 fighters to Poland as a substitute.
US officials, including Blinken, have underestimated the possibility of NATO countries that supply Ukrainians which are surrounded from the beginning of this week.
But talking in Moldova on Sunday, Blinken confirmed it in an active discussion.
“Can’t talk to the timeline, but I can say we see it very, very active,” he told reporters.
“We are actively looking for now on the question of the plane that Poland can provide to Ukraine and see how we can refill if Poland decides to supply the planes.”
Comments came one day after Blinken met with Ukrainian foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba on the border of Poland-Ukraine and Kuleba pressed it for airplanes.
After 10 brutal war days, said Kuleba, “the highest demand we have is a combat jet, airplane attack, and air defense system.”
“If we lose the sky, there will be more blood on the ground,” he said after the meeting, with Blinken standing beside him.
While the important part of the Ukrainian Air Force remains intact since the war began on February 24, both Ukraine and Russia have maintained significant losses and did not control the airspace in the country.
But Russia has a large air force that if mobilized can fully destroy Ukraine.
Escalation risk
The United States has opposed the agreement, along with several key members of NATO, worried that Russia will interpret it because NATO – Poland is a member – actively joined the Ukrainian war, and triggered a much wider conflict.
But Ukrainian furnishing supporters with more aircraft from NATO countries argue that alliances, and the US especially, have given tons of deadly weapons and kyiv ammunition every day since the war began.
However, another problem is that the United States does not have the F-16 coming out of the production line to easily supply Poland, which also faces the potential threat from Russia and requires aircraft to defend themselves.
Any agreement will require the approval and support of the White House in the US Congress, and the possibility of NATO support as well.
Congress is likely to run, after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged parliament on Saturday in conference calls to provide more weapons.
But Poland also does not necessarily rise with ideas.
“Poland will not send his combat jet to Ukraine and allows to use the air. We significantly help in many other regions,” Prime Minister Chancellor wrote in week Tweets.
