China warns of ‘drastic measures’ if Taiwan provokes on independence
China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory and in the past two years has increased military and diplomatic pressure to confirm its sovereignty claims, triggering anger in Taipei and concern in Washington.
China will take the “drastic action” if Taiwan moves towards formal independence, a Beijing official warns on Wednesday, adding that Taiwan provocation and intervening can increase next year.
China claims democratically ruled Taiwan as its own territory and in the past two years has increased military and diplomatic pressure to confirm its sovereignty claims, triggering anger in Taipei and concern in Washington.
China is willing to try our best to look for peaceful peace with Taiwan but will act if there is a red line about independence crossed, Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office, told media direction.
“If separatist troops in Taiwan are looking for independence provoking, mobilizing strength or even breaking the red line, we must take drastic steps,” said Ma.
In a statement at the end of Wednesday, Taiwan’s mainland affairs board urged Beijing to “seriously reflect on his work towards Taiwan and made a correct assessment in the situation”.
The Board reaffirms its call for dialogue with the same base and said it has maintained a policy of “not provoking” to protect peace throughout the Taiwan Strait and in the region.
Taiwan has emerged as a key factor in tense relationships between Taiwan and the United States, the supplier of international supporters and the most important arms on the island despite the absence of formal diplomatic bonds.
Taiwan said it was an independent country and oath to maintain freedom and democracy.
China regularly describes the island as the most sensitive problem in relation to the United States.
MA said provocation by pro-independence strength and “external intervention” can grow “sharper and more intense” in the coming months.
“Next year, the situation of the Taiwan Strait will become more complex and severe,” he said.
Beijing has sent a repeat air mission on the Taiwan Strait in recent months to pressure Taiwan. It takes it won’t give up on threats.
While the United States only recognizes one China, is required by the law to give Taiwan by defending itself and has long followed the “Strategic Ambiguity” policy on whether to carry out military intervention to protect Taiwan at that time.
The government of the Republic of China who was defeated escaped to Taiwan in 1949 after losing civil wars with communists, who founded the People’s Republic of China.
