US, Europe Urge Russia To End Sexual Violence In Ukraine War
UN: The United States and Europe urged Russia on Monday to stop alleged sexual violence by soldiers and proxies in Ukraine, the accusation that Moscow criticized as a “lie”.
The request was made during the UN Security Council meeting, organized by Albania, who currently holds the rotating president.
“It is Russia to stop rape, violence, and cruelty from inside his ranks. It is Russia to end a war that is not treated and not circulating against Ukraine people, and we ask the Russian federation to do that,” we said Ambassador Linda Thomas- Greenfield.
European Council President Charles Michel condemned the “cruelty” by Russia.
“These crimes must and will be punished. To ask for responsibility for those who are responsible, we need evidence and we are now helping to gather evidence of this crime,” he said.
He added that Moscow “was merely responsible” for the food crisis triggered by the Russian invasion of his neighbors.
The accusation directed the Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, left the room and was replaced with a representative.
Nebenzia previously denied alleged sexual violations committed by Russian troops in Ukraine.
“Allegations of sexual violence against Russian army have been repeated … but no evidence is given,” he said.
Pramila Patten, a special representative of the United Nations on Sexual Violence in Conflict, urged that the crime of sexual violence “was eventually reflected in any peace agreement.
